Our people could not stand the rotten police corruption. They’ll be back at the next election. They can’t stand reform either.
Boss Richard Crocker, Tammany Hall, 1895
The Albuquerque Journal, local television stations and the right-wing contributors to this site have made a big stink in recent days over the decision by a number of Governor Bill Richardson’s loyal lieutenants to name a highway interchange in honor of their boss.
In the aftermath of the election, it’s easy to kick Governor Richardson while he’s down. Even a few Democrats are openly deriding their former patron, and are eagerly seeking to collaborate with the incoming administration of that shrill Susana Martinez.
My friends, those of you who were made by Bill Richardson should remember that treachery has a price. The 2010 election was a temporary setback. If you value your long term prospects, and your hides, you will do well to keep that in mind.
Some Progressives are already talking about who the Democratic nominee for Governor should be in 2014. Some of you are suggesting Attorney General Gary King, or Congressman Martin Heinrich or even Diane Denish.
You are all fools. The Democratic nominee in 2014 will be Bill Richardson.
In four years, the rabble will be tired of the austere harping of Susana Martinez and her budget cutting minions. New Mexicans will long for the days of Big Bill and his dynamic, high spending largess. Then, Bill will have his revenge — for every slight and for every derogatory comment made over the past two years. Like Lord Voldemort, Bill will return from the depths of the polling abyss, and he will remember who was with him, and who was against him.
Loyal soldiers, like Johnny Cope and the other members of the State Transportation Commission, will be rewarded. Enemies and traitors will be punished.
Would-be collaborators should consider what happened to Cicero.
